The “Smoke-Free University” project represents a core strategic mission designed to align with public policy goals and to elevate the quality of life for students, staff, and visitors in accordance with international health standards. Efforts during 2024 emphasized whole-of-campus collaboration rather than simple rule enforcement, focusing on supporting lasting behavior change. Key actions included upgrading signage and strengthening control measures across all smoke-free zones— including open spaces and university vehicles—to ensure both clarity and compliance. Awareness campaigns on the dangers of conventional and electronic cigarettes were organized in partnership with the “To Be Number One” project. Orientation programs for all new students and staff integrated educational content on smoking harms, methods for reduction and cessation, and the right to clean air. Digital public information materials were also produced and shared widely through the university’s online and social media platforms. Monitoring activities—such as counting discarded cigarette butts in public areas—served to evaluate cleanliness and compliance, resulting in improved campus hygiene and awareness. In late 2024, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation issued new national guidelines on controlling smoking and e-cigarette use in educational institutions, including Rajabhat Universities. As part of the Faculty of Nursing Establishment Project, a student leadership development initiative was introduced to promote continuous screening for cigarette and e-cigarette use among new students. Workshops were conducted to build understanding of associated health risks and to encourage behavioral change through interactive learning and communication media. The university’s implementation strategy integrates knowledge management, research and innovation, and the designation of smoke-free and e-cigarette-free zones. Regular supervision and maintenance ensure ongoing compliance with relevant health and safety regulations. The results of these efforts—including the level of awareness within the university community, the rate of compliance in various areas, and the number of people who accessed smoking cessation services— will serve as a critical foundation for planning and strategizing toward the goal of achieving a “Completely Smoke-Free University” by 2025. 💚 Aligned with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being This initiative demonstrates NSTRU’s commitment to tobacco control, behavioral change, and a healthy, smoke-free campus that promotes clean air and long-term well-being for all.
